Little Protection
Unlike car accidents where you are protected by crumple zones, airbags, and seat-belts, the motorcyclist is protected solely by a helmet, and sometimes leather apparel. This offers little protection when hit by a car or truck that can weigh several tons. Therefore, motorcycle accidents most often result in the serious injuries or death of the motorcycle rider.
Design Hazards
In addition to accidents caused by the negligence of other drivers, many motorcycle accidents are caused by unsafe design. Riders must have sufficient time to react to information and poorly designed or maintained roads can hinder the riders ability to do so.
Some common design hazards include:
- Lack of warning
- Blind Corners
- Poorly placed speed bumps
- Low curbs
- Landscaping
- Culverts
- Traffic Islands with no night visibility
- Poorly lit streets
- Cobble stones or pavers
- And uncovered drainage pits
Product Defects
Another cause of motorcycle injuries can also be product defects. For example, studies have shown that certain models of Harley-Davidson motorcycles have had design, manufacturing, or assembly defects that have led to serious injuries and death.
