A Los Angeles County jury awarded $21.3 million to Leila Miyamoto-Workman, who sustained severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury and spinal injuries, after her vehicle was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler truck driven by Daniel Almazan. The incident occurred on July 18, 2016, at the intersection of E. Wardlow Road and Elm Ave in Long Beach, California, while Miyamoto-Workman was waiting to make a left turn.
The lawsuit, filed on October 31, 2017, named Services Group of America, Inc., Food Services of America, Inc., Daniel Almazan, and Systems Services of America, Inc. as defendants. The plaintiff sought compensation for various damages, including medical expenses, loss of earning capacity, and general damages. Attorney Nick Rowley requested between $48.5 million and $72.75 million, citing extensive medical treatments following the traumatic brain injury and multiple surgeries. The defense argued that the injuries were less severe and characterized the collision as low-speed.
After deliberation, the jury awarded Miyamoto-Workman $825,000 in past economic damages, $6.5 million in future economic damages, $4 million in past non-economic damages, and $10 million in future non-economic damages, totaling $21,325,000.
